Barbe Sweeps 5A District Swimming Championships

Posted: Updated:

Barbe High School swimmers took 5A district titles in combined, boys, and girls divisions at the Southwest Louisiana Swim League's District Championships Thursday night. The combined team, coached by Kent Shepard, racked up 1052 points to grab the trophy for their 6th year and to beat out Lafayette High School who came in second with Sulphur High school in third. Barbe's boys 200 Freestyle Relay team narrowly missed the league record that was reset by St. Louis High School the night before.

24 first and second place finishers in individual events were named to the 2017 5A All District team. Several other swimmers made their state cuts and will be attending the LHSAA Swimming Championships in Sulphur in two weeks. 133 swimmers from seven high schools competed in the meet.

In the boys division, Barbe led the way with 508 points beating out Lafayette High School boys, dashing the Mighty Lion's hopes of regaining the boys title for a second year in a row. Like the combined division, Sulphur came in third. On the girls side, Barbe dominated with 544 points with Sulphur ladies taking second place and Lafayette High School third.

Lafayette High's Miguel Vasquez smashed the record for the 100 Freestyle with a time of 48.50. The old record was set by Andrew Reynolds of ESA back in 2004.
