UPDATE: Subject in fatal thruway shooting will not be charged

Posted: Updated:

Lafayette Police say no one will be arrested in the Thursday morning shooting on Evangeline Thruway.

Police say the man who was killed was allegedly attempting to steal a truck while the owner was distracted.

The alleged robber and the vehicle owner engaged a "violent struggle," and during that struggle, the owner's gun fired, and the alleged robber was fatally wounded.

Police say the shooting was justified, and no charges will be filed against the vehicle owner, police said.

Police are on the scene of a fatal shooting in Lafayette.

Police were dispatched to E. Willow near the Evangeline Thruway Thursday around 9:00 am to investigate a fatal shooting near Home Depot, according to Cpl. Karl Ratcliff, spokesman for the Lafayette Police Department.

One person is in custody and no arrests have been made at this time, added Ratcliff.

KATC has a crew en route and will have more information as it becomes available.
