UL Softball players write letter to UL

Posted: Updated:

The UL softball team is protesting administrators in the UL athletics department. They are also expressing their support for their coach Mike Lotief, who's been on leave since early October, after he says he raised Title IX concerns with the university.

29 of the women on the team released a statement in support of Lotief saying the athletic department is conducting an "unjust investigation" into him.

"He's just kind of like our dad away from home," said sophomore player Alyssa Denham. "He's the reason I came here, I mean I'm from out of state and it's hard to stay motivated when he's not here."

After nearly a month without the head coach, the UL softball team is wondering when he will come back.

"Coach Mike brings so much energy and so much compassion to us and it's hard to remember my why and the reason I'm there," sad Denham.

The players say Lotief has been mistreated for standing up for them as female athletes. And now they say they feel betrayed.

"We put so much into it and then for them to just leave us without anything is kind of hurtful and we feel betrayed because we expected them to have our backs," said DJ Sanders, a senior player on the team.

And on Monday morning assistant coach and former Ragin Cajun softball player Sara Corbello was fired.

"She was given no reasoning. They contacted her over the weekend and fired her on Monday. She had nothing to do with the investigation into Lotief and they wouldn't give her a reason as to why they fired her," said Corbello's attorney Clayton Burgess.

Now the players wrote a letter hoping to get the administration's attention.

"It's just very sad because we bring a lot of positive to the university. We compete in the classroom and on the field. We represent UL and so it's just really hard to know that they are knd of targeting our backs when we feel we haven't done anything wrong," said Denham

We reached out to the university but they denied to comment.
