Lake Charles Police have started a new program that aims to help residents prevent burglaries.

The Safe & Secure Program is designed to prevent burglaries to make homes less appealing to thieves, a spokesman said.

The main offering is a Home Security Check. To do that, a Lake Charles Police Property Crimes Detective or Community Policing Officer will schedule a meeting with the homeowner to conduct a home security check. The home security check is an inspection of the home, inside & outside, to inform the homeowner of where improvements can be made to make their home more secure and less likely to be the target of a burglar, the spokesman said.

The officer also will talk to homeowners about how a burglary investigation works, so that if they are a victim of a burglary they will know what to do, and how to help solve the crime. The officer will provide the homeowner with a suspect description form, as well as a home inventory list for the homeowner to use to catalog their belongings, in case of a break-in. You can take a look at the forms below.

Lake Charles residents who would like to schedule a check should call the department at (337) 491-1311.
