The identities of the two men killed in a crash involving four 18-wheelers on I-10 in West Baton Rouge Parish have been released by police.
At 2:00 am on October 30, 2017, troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop A began investigating a four-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 eastbound east of Grosse Tete in West Baton Rouge Parish, according to police. The crash took the life of Alex Willett, 55, of Orange, TX, and his passenger, John Mack, 53, of Beaumont, TX.

The initial investigation revealed that the crash occurred as eastbound traffic on I-10 came to a stop due to congestion from a previous crash.  For reasons still under investigation, Willett failed to reduce the speed of his 2016 Peterbuilt as he approached stopped traffic in the right lane.  Willett's vehicle struck the rear of a 2016 Freightliner truck. The impact pushed the Freightliner forward into the rear of a 2013 International truck.  The Freighliner overturned and came to rest in the median.  The 2013 International vehicle pushed forward into the rear of a 2016 International truck.

Alex Willet and John Mack sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the West Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office.  The other parties involved sustained minor to moderate injuries.  Police say impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash and a toxicology sample will be taken from all drivers for analysis.

UPDATE: I-10 eastbound near Grosse Tete is now open to traffic. Motorists are asked to use caution while driving along the roadway nearing the area of Grosse Tete.

UPDATE: I-10 East bound is closed between 1-49 and Grosse Tete due to a fatal accident.

State police say all traffic headed east on I 10 is being diverted north at I-49 onto U.S. 190 East at Opelousas and then back to I 10 in Baton Rouge.

The detour, I-49 North to US 190 East, is heavily congested. Congestion has reached LA 182 (University Avenue) in Lafayette.

Police say that two people have been killed and two more were transported to the hospital. The wreck involved multiple 18-wheelers.

We will have more information as it becomes available.
