Bear spotted in New Iberia subdivision

Posted: Updated:

Iberia Parish sheriff's deputies and state wildlife agents are searching for two black bears spotted in a subdivision Tuesday afternoon.

Captain Wendell Raborn of the Iberia Parish Sheriff's Office says wildlife agents are still on the scene.  Raborn says his office received calls from residents about a mama bear and her cub roaming through the area.  Rabor adds that Wildlife and Fisheries handle the trapping and relocating of bears in residential areas in the state and that the sheriff's office hands over these types of cases to LDWF when they occur.

Wildlife and Fisheries did respond to the call out of Southwood Park Subdivision and say that the bear has not been spotted since the initial call this afternoon. Agents do not believe that there is any cause for alarm but residents should be vigilant.
