The general public got a chance to voice their concerns and get their questions answered about a levee project proposal for Iberia Parish.

The project, which will be on the ballot November 18, 2017, in the form of a 5 million dollar property millage. The tax will go towards helping to fund flood protection.

At the meeting on Tuesday evening, Iberia Parish Officials along with the Acadiana Flood Protection Coalition discussed ways in which the project would benefit the parish. The project will cost $500 million dollars or more to complete. The new levee is part of a statewide flood protection plan from Louisiana's Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority

This is one of several other scheduled meetings to talk about the levee project before voting in November.

Construction on the levee is expected to bring jobs to the area, along with creating businesses and save lives.

The levee project goes up for a vote for the parish on November 18, 2017.

The listing on the ballot for that vote will read as follows:

Levee, Hurricane, and Conservation District Proposition (Millage)

Shall the Iberia Parish Levee, Hurricane and Conservation District (the "District"), levy a five (5) mills tax on all the property subject to taxation in the District (an estimated $2,900,000 reasonably expected at this time to be collected from the levy of the tax for an entire year), for a period of thirty (30) years, beginning with the year 2018 and ending with the year 2047, to be dedicated solely for the purposes of construction, acquisition, maintenance, operation and extension and/or improvement of levees, hurricane/surge protection, and flood control within the District?
