Opelousas community hopeful bar lost in fire will rebuild

OPELOUSAS, La. -

An Opelousas bar owner and his patrons are trying to figure out how an overnight fire started early Monday morning, leaving Rob's Lounge charred and destroyed.

"I just feel so bad like, I don't know. I don't know. I don't know what to think right now, like look at it," said Jaquita Jubert, a family member of the bar's owner.

Jubert was one of dozens who stopped by what was once Rob's Lounge on a day that owner Rob Henry says felt like a funeral.

"People coming by with their condolences and telling me that they're sorry. This place has been a part of the neighborhood for so long, so it is a loss," said Henry.

For nine years, many considered the lounge a fixture in the community.

"A lot of my customers walk here from the neighborhood. It was just a place where people could come and relax," said Henry.

The owner says his bar drew in older customers, as well as patrons from the younger crowd.

"Drink, dance, turn up like they say. Just for this to happen is like, wow," says Jubert.

"They were always welcome. I never did charge a fee to come in. So that means if you have $2.00 in your pocket, you can come in and have a beer and relax," said Henry.

Henry says everyone who showed up to wish him well had one thing in common--they hope to see the doors at Rob's open again someday.

"We were getting tired. We were getting tired of the hustle and bustle. But the community is pulling together so much and trying to get me to rebuild, so I'm kind of leaning that way now," said Henry.

No one was inside the bar when the fire started. The fire marshal says nothing at the scene looks suspicious at this point.
