1 person remains missing after oil platform explosion in Kenner

Posted: Updated:

One person is missing after an explosion occurred last night on an oil platform in Lake Pontchartrain in Kenner, Louisiana.

The New Orleans Coast Guard received the report from witnesses of the explosion at around 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening. One of the platform workers reported that eight people were aboard at the time of the explosion and that one person had not made it to shore. Six of the seven people who made it to shore where taken to the hospital.

According to The Advocate, residents could hear and feel the blast as far away as St. James Parish.

Officials said that the explosion may have occurred due to cleaning chemicals that ignited on the platform during a maintenance operation.

It was not known if oil was leaking into the lake, but officials said that the lake is shallower and would allow for an easier cleanup.
