69th annual Louisiana Cattle Festival kicks off

Posted: Updated:

Thursday the 69th annual cattle festival kicks off in Abbeville. The festival celebrates traditions, both old and new.

"I have a picture that I have in the collection of memories, a child is looking up and he's smiling his eyes are this big and I just keep that picture handy because that's why I do it," said Francis Plaisance, the president of the Louisiana Cattle Festival

"I hope the public really comes out and sees this," he said. "It's gonna be an experience they'll never forget. As a kid we'd walk, we were close enough we'd walk to the festival and enjoy the bands and it just has stayed with me all of my life."

Plaisance isn't the only one with history at the festival.

"I was the petite cattle fest queen, a deb, I was the junior cattle fest queen," said Gabby Guilbeau. She now wears the crown of Miss Louisiana Cattle Festival Queen.

"It feels amazing it's a dream come true. I actually slept with the crown on the night I was crowned," said Guilbeau. "It's been a tradition in my life for a long time. I've been going to the cattle festival since I was a little girl and just being there that long, it just means a lot."

The cattle festival rolls on through Sunday evening in downtown Abbeville. Among the sights at this year's festival is a white tiger exhibit at the fairgrounds. Admission to that event is 3 dollars, but admission to most of the other events is free.
