Family speaks out about shooting on Hobson Street

Posted: Updated:

Lafayette police are investigating a deadly overnight shooting on Hobson street.

The victim was 41-year-old Billy Roy Junior.

Family members and friends are now speaking out about the moments that led up to the shooting.

The victim's cousin, who wishes not to be identified, told KATC Roy had been staying with her for the last few days.

She said she heard him pull up at the house late Tuesday evening, and he was talking with his nephew.

She then saw someone walk up to Roy and moments later, heard a single gunshot.

A neighbor also told KATC that he tried to do CPR, but couldn't revive Roy.

Lafayette City-Parish Councilman Kenneth Boudreaux said gun violence is getting out of hand in the community, and he wants to put an end to it.

"It was a robbery. This individual became victimized by an actual robbery, and it's unfortunate that someone feels that they need to take something that someone else has," Boudreaux said.

He plans to educate the community on gun violence, as well keep guns out of the hands of certain people.

"I'm asking that we take a close look at what guns are doing in poor communities. How are these guns being accessed and how do we address that issue? How do we get guns out of the hands of people who are mentally ill or people who are abusing substances? Those are the conversations we need to have; those are the answers I'm looking for," Boudreaux said.

There is also a buyback program in Lafayette. Boudreaux will buy a gun from anyone, anywhere in order to get them off the streets.
