A grand jury has handed up a first-degree murder indictment against Ian Howard, the Lafayette man accused of shooting and killing Lafayette Cpl. Michael Middlebrook.

Howard was arrested in Middlebrook's murder on Oct. 2, when he's accused of shooting two other people and shooting at another police officer at the Big Boy convenience store. Middlebrook and the other officer were responding to Howard's alleged shooting at the store at Moss Street and Van Buren Drive.

He's since been held without bond and could face the death penalty or life in prison if convicted of the charge.
