Suspect arrested after rash of break-ins at UL housing

LAFAYETTE, La. -

There have been several break-ins in an on-campus apartment complex at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (UL) and police are reminding the campus community to make sure all windows and doors are locked at all times.

On September 28, 2017, an unknown person entered a first-floor unit in the Legacy Park Apartments, Calais Building, from an unlocked balcony door. The suspect removed a set of car keys from the victim's purse, The suspect located the vehicle and stole it, according to police.

On October 2, 2017, University of Louisiana Police Department (ULPD) officers received a call of a similar burglary at Legacy Park Apartments, Thibodeaux Building, where an unknown subject entered the first-floor residence from an unlocked balcony door. The residence owners reported electronic items missing.

On October 4, 2017, ULPD received another call of a burglary at Legacy Park Apartments, Bancroft Building, where a subject entered the first-floor residence from an unlocked balcony door. The residence owners were home at the time and described seeing a male suspect in the apartment. Police say the subject was seen running out the front door of the residence.

Investigators were able to identify the suspect as a 16-year-old juvenile. 

On Monday, the juvenile was picked up for questioning, where he subsequently confessed to all three burglaries as
well as the stolen vehicle, according to investigators.  The stolen vehicle was recovered and returned to the owner.

The juvenile was charged with three counts of burglary of an inhabited dwelling and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
