World Championship Gumbo Cook-off to be held in New Iberia

Posted: Updated:

The World Championship Gumbo Cook-off will be held in New Iberia this weekend Saturday, October 14 and 15 in Bouligny Plaza. The Gumbo Cook-off begins on Sunday.

The event is the biggest Gumbo Cook-off in the World and is currently in its 28th year. Seventy-seven teams are competing this year to serve up the best bowl of Gumbo in the world. The cook-off will feature 89 different Gumbos and the public is welcome to taste them all.

The Gumbo Cook-off will begin directly at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday. Before the cooking can begin, Gumbo police make their way through each competitors station making sure ingredients are traditional and that there's no cheating with pre-made roux.

The Gumbo cook-off will be preceded on Saturday morning by the Cajun Creole Food Fest which will feature a 5k run, live bands, and Cajun and Creole food favorites. The "Meanest Beans" red bean cook-off will begin on Saturday at 7:00 a.m. followed by the "youth Gumbo Cook-off". Nine young teams will be competing in that category.
