Spirit of Acadiana: CYT Lafayette's Shrek the Musical

Posted: Updated:

It's the story of a beautiful princess locked away in a tower. It's the story of an ogre simply trying to protect his home from trespassers.

Shrek the Musical is the latest production of Christian Youth Theater and the cast of 75 is ready to bring you a fairy tale with a message for the ages.

"Shrek the musical is about accepting who you are, accepting yourself and letting others accept you for it, too," explained John Verzwyvelt who plays Pinocchio in the production.

Acceptance and being true to yourself is at the core of Shrek the Musical. As is the friendship between our favorite ogre and his, uh, noble steed.

"He doesn't realize we're actually friends until the end of the show when he realizes he needs me, we go good together," Cullen Zeno says of his character Donkey's friendship with the complicated green ogre.

The story here has all of your favorite fairy tale celebrities, and they've been banished to Shrek's swamp. He wants them out, but that means he'll have to deal with the evil Lord Farquaad. A deal is made and Farquaad will move the fairy talers out of Shrek's swamp if Shrek and Donkey rescue a princess named "Fiona"

"She's sassy, she's loud and obnoxious, but all in all, she's very well-meaning, very hilarious," says Sophia Brazda, who is taking on the role of the strong-willed Fiona.

From Thursday to Sunday, there will be five performances at UL Lafayette's Angelle Hall and our interviewees say rehearsals have gone quite well.

"I'm digging the rehearsals, I'm digging the cast, digging the show, people should come see it" says Verzwyvelt.

The mission of CYT Lafayette is quite simple:  provide quality theater for kids, with a reminder that their talents come from a higher power.

"CYT is a place where I can really perform for God, and really do everything for him,"  says Zeno.

Sophia Brazda adds, "that carries into our performances, we respect each other as performers and actors; you have a second family."

CYT Lafayette's Shrek the Musical, this very weekend, it's coming to a theater or a swamp near you.

"The songs are colorful and they're loud and they're crazy… so are all the characters.. it's a really fun show…"

Performances begin tonight at 7:00 p.m. at Angelle Hall on the UL Lafayette campus. Those interested in seeing the show can still get your tickets for tonight's performance or any of the other performances through Sunday.
