LAFAYETTE, La. -

A Lafayette police officer is dead after a shooting at a convenience store.

Master Trooper Brooks David with Louisiana State Police says the call came in around 10 p.m. from the store at the corner of Moss Street and Van Buren Drive.  David says police received a call of a battery and shots fired.  When the officer arrived, the suspect allegedly opened fire, leading to an exchange of gunfire. Two others were also shot in the incident.  David says those victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

According to David, the suspect fled the scene on foot after the shooting.  Police caught the suspect a short time later and took him into custody. Investigators are not yet disclosing the identity of the officer who died or the suspect.

The investigation is active and ongoing.  We will bring you more details as they become available.

Officers say that Moss and Van Buren Streets reopened to traffic just after 7:00 a.m. Monday morning.
