PRESS RELEASE

LAFAYETTE – After starting unbeaten over their first three Sun Belt Conference games the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team dropped their first match in conference, 3-0, at home to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers at the Ragin' Cajuns Soccer/Track Complex.

For Louisiana, it's their first loss since Sept. 8 and it drops their record to 5-5-1 (2-1-1 SBC), it's also the biggest loss they've suffered this season.

The win increases Coastal Carolina's record to 8-4-0 (2-2-0 SBC), and it's the first win for the Chanticleers in Lafayette since joining the conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED (First Half): The Cajuns came out on fire and set a pace that for the most of the first half Coastal Carolina couldn't maintain.  It started with senior Ashleigh Cade having two shots that rocketed just high of goal, first in the fifth minute and shortly thereafter in the eighth minute.

As the Cajuns kept hunting for their first goal, they worked the ball for a corner in the 15th minute and it resulted in a header from sophomore Erika Sierra, that was blocked by the defense.

As the ball worked around it found itself again in front of the CCU goal and another shot from Cade was the result, but that too was blocked by a stingy CCU defense.

Louisiana kept the tempo up, but they just couldn't cash in and freshman Grace Champagne's shot, after a great back heel feed, was just blocked keeping the Cajuns out of goal.

As the half winded down, CCU took their first shot on goal in the 41st minute and unfortunately for the Cajuns it found the back of the net to give CCU a 1-0 lead.

But the Cajuns almost equalized, in the 41st minute, on a shot lofted by senior Kimberly Grasso that tipped off the fingertips of CCU's goalkeeper, Rylee Atteberry, but a CCU defender was sitting on the back post and she cleared the ball before it crossed the line denying the Cajuns of a goal as the first half came to an end with CCU up 1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Second Half): In the second half CCU came out and quickly took a two-goal lead on a goal near the end of the 50th minute to put the score at 2-0 with the Cajuns now in a hole.

From there the Cajuns fortunes didn't improve and CCU scored again less than four minutes later, in the 53rd minute, to put the Cajuns behind 3-0 early in the second half.

Louisiana didn't stop working towards their first goal, but the CCU defense wouldn't let the Cajuns get back in the game.

In the 67th minute senior Haley Boroch headed a shot that just bounced off the crossbar, in fact through the match the Cajuns hit the crossbar twice on headers.  Boroch's in the second half and Taggart had a header midway through the first half.

But the Cajuns didn't get the goal they were looking for on either occasion, and it meant that when the final whistle blew Louisiana had fallen at home for the first time in the month of September, with the score sitting at 3-0.

NOTEWORTHY: The Cajuns outshot CCU 18-7 and Cade lead the way with four shots; Taggart was aggressive as well, with three shots of her own, two of which were headers.

UP NEXT: The Cajuns return to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 1 as they'll take on the Georgia State Panthers in Atlanta, Georgia.  That match will have a noon start and live stats will be available courtesy of the Georgia State athletic department.
