Posted: Updated:

A man wielding an ax in Chalmette attacked and killed his ex-wife Wednesday morning, according to St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office.

In a press briefing, the sheriff's office states that the victim, identified as 48-year-old Kimberly Owens, was leaving her home around 8:00 a.m. for work when her ex-husband, Mark Owens, allegedly emerged from hiding and fatally struck her. Police say they believe the 56-year-old Mark Owens was hiding under the woman's house on Palmetto Street in Chalmette.

Deputies report that the mother of the victim and a neighbor witnessed or partially witnessed the attack. Both were uninjured.

During the press briefing, deputies reported that Mark Owens was arrested in 2015 for a domestic dispute but did not elaborate on the case. The couple had been divorced for some time.

The Owens later turned himself in. He is being charged with second-degree murder.
