Home for the Holidays campaign begins

Posted: Updated:

Ticket sales began this week for this year's Home for the Holidays campaign. This year's home is under construction in the Bayou Tortue Manor subdivision on Bayou Tortue Road in Broussard. It's valued at $495,000 and features 2,813 sq. ft. of living area with 4 bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms.

Proceeds from ticket sales are dedicated to local, shelter-related charities including Lafayette Habitat for Humanity, Faith House, Healing House for Grieving Children, and St. Michael’s Center for Veterans. So far, AHBA and KATC have been able to donate over $1.8 Million to these charities since the project’s conception in 2005.

KATC General Manager Andrew D Shenkan said each ticket represents a "hard-working $100" for local people.

"These are four great organizations, among others, who will benefit from these funds and that's why KATC along with the AHBA, continue to do this program, because it really benefits Acadiana," Shenkan said.

Shenkan said many tickets are purchased by people who are trying to help, not necessarily win something.

"Most people who buy a ticket, when we ask them after the fact, they buy it to support the organizations and the effort of the campaign, and if they win the house, great," Shenkan said. "But most of them don't expect to win it. The good thing about Home for the Holidays is, there are so many prizes people can win."

Shenkan said the services provided by the four charities - to families who couldn't afford a home otherwise, to women and children facing domestic violence, to children who have lost a loved one, to homeless veterans - are priceless.

"I can't put a value on that, and I don't think anybody else could, and I'm just glad KATC, with our partners, are there to help when these people really need it," he said.

It's not every day you see a dinosaur greet a student at a bus stop, but one Louisiana father pulled off the ultimate "dad joke."
