A Lafayette grand jury has indicted a local woman in the May slaying of Leroy Hamilton.

Melissa Neilson, 34, was indicted on a count of manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of Hamilton, 36.

Police were called to a Family Dollar store at about 8 p.m. on May 12. They found Hamilton dead from a gunshot wound.

Police say Neilson and her husband Robert Neilson, 34, allegedly engaged in a drug transaction with the victim, which escalated into a fatal shooting.

Police arrested Melissa Neilson on charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to possess Schedule I narcotic, but the grand jury indicted her on the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Neilson remains in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center where she has been since her arrest the day following the shooting.

Her husband also was arrested on charges of principal to first-degree murder and possession of marijuana, but he was not named in Wednesday's indictment.
