Drivers concerned about construction on Verot School Road

Posted: Updated:

Construction continues on a major thoroughfare in Lafayette Parish and it's causing headaches for some drivers. A widening project for Verot School Road has been underway since 2015 and now some drivers are taking a second look at the construction.

"It's a pain, but we've been waiting for it for a long time, " resident John Nowlin said.

"It's an inconvenience. We've been waiting for it long enough to where we should wait, but I wished they hurry. "

Drivers like Nowlin are used to the construction on Verot School Road, but not used to seeing the area with no shoulder and a steep drop to the construction site.

"I don't like driving at night, " Nowlin said. "The thought of living with this for another year and half is kind of daunting, but when it's done it'll be great. "

The entire road will be rebuilt at a lower level and replaced with concrete.

"For us it's just a different type of what we call a curb and gutter oppose to having ditches along the side of the roadway," Deidra Druilhet of DOTD said. "That will help drain water from off the roadway. The drainage is underneath the road so to speak. You will see a lot of those drainage work along the side of the roadway instead of ditches alongside the roadway."

The work should be complete next summer, for Nowlin he hopes to drive his little red corvette on the new pavement soon.

"You got to pay for progress, " Nowlin said. "I want it to be done, but it's still a pain. "
