Three charged in Ville Platte after being hit by truck

Evangeline Parish -

A Ville Platte man and two teenagers are recovering after all three were hit by a truck. However, they are facing charges, and the driver isn't. Police have fined the three for not wearing reflective clothing at night and charged them with obstructing a public passage.

Twenty-one-year-old Deonte Williams, 19-year-old Cody Mayes and 17-year-old Tevin Wilson have scrapes, bruises and even staples after being hit by a truck on North Chataignier Street.

What the three find most upsetting is that the driver was not charged and they were.

"For me to find out that this guy gets to just go home, we all get some misdemeanors and nothing happened to him," Williams explains. "I'm upset about it."

The crash happened near a neighborhood around 8 p.m. Tuesday night. The area doesn't have sidewalks.

"I just wake up; my cousin [is] telling me, 'Don't get up,' and I was just full of blood," Williams recounts. "When I wake up, I don't see nobody with the truck there. I don't see nothing, but the ambulance leaving with me."

Police say Williams and the teens were in the wrong for being in the roadway and not wearing reflective gear. The city has an ordinance for pedestrians to wear reflective garments after dark while walking.

The charges they face are misdemeanors.  According to police, the driver remained at the scene and stated that he was blinded by the headlights of an oncoming vehicle.  However, Williams and the teens argue the driver was at fault.  According to Williams, the three were not in the middle of the road.

Williams said they were walking on the side of the road near the grass and two others were walking in the grass. Williams said they were hit from behind. "He must have had his lights off and going pretty fast because it hit all three of us."

Police say there was no indication or signs of alcohol on the driver; however, Williams says he and his friends are hoping their charges are dropped.

"I guess the Lord got to work in his own way," Williams says.
