St. Landry Parish Sheriff's deputies arrested an Opelousas man in the attempted murder of his girlfriend.

Christopher W. Shedd, 33, was booked with attempted second-degree murder. His bond is set at $300,000.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff Deputies responded to a medical call on Andre Martin Road in Opelousas. Reports indicated that a female was bleeding from her head. Shedd met with patrol deputies and initially stated that the female victim fell and hit her head under the carport. The unconscious victim was transported to a Lafayette hospital due to the extent of trauma to her head.

But the emergency trauma doctor said that the victim had sustained two forceful points of impact to her head. One point of impact was in the back of her head and the other was near her left temple, rendering the female victim unconscious and in a fight for her life. The female underwent emergency surgery, deputies say.

After deputies talked to the doctor, and noticed that Shedd, who was reportedly the victim's boyfriend, was not at the hospital, detectives were notified. When detectives arrived back at the scene to interview Shedd, they could smell bleach and vinegar under the carport. There was also a large pile of granular absorbents where the victim was found. After reading Shedd his rights, he admitted to trying to clean up the blood because he did not want to smell it.

Deputies say Shedd stated he lived with the victim for about 12 months and the relationship started going downhill six months ago. Shedd stated that the victim was evil and needed to be killed, deputies say. Shedd allegedly said he felt that he was the only one that could do it. Shedd allegedly said that he had planned on killing her since the beginning of the week and stated prior to him getting off work and the victim picking him up, he obtained a double-sided small hammer and concealed it in the small of his back. When the victim exited the vehicle and was unlocking the carport door, Shedd allegedly said he retrieved the hammer from the small of his back and hit her as hard as he could in the back of the head. The victim fell to the ground and began to holler, Shedd allegedly told deputies. Shedd allegedly said he did not want anyone to hear her hollering and wanted her to die quickly and painlessly so he struck her again in the left temple with great force.

Shedd then acted out his entire actions to detectives showing them how he tried to kill the victim, deputies say. The hammer was recovered at the scene and it had freshly been washed. Shedd was then arrested and transported to the parish jail for processing.  The victim is still in intensive care. The extent of her brain injuries is undetermined.

"This is a very tragic case and prayers are needed for the victim.  No one should suffer an attack like this," Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said. "Anytime you feel you are in a relationship that is toxic, you should end the relationship before things get out of hand. In cases of domestic abuse, there are programs 24/7 waiting to assist you."
