Jump Start program certifies record number of teachers

More than 600 Louisiana educators joined together for the five-day professional development event designed to enhance career and technical education statewide. The 2017 Jump Start Super Summer Institute, according to a press release, provides post-secondary educators with the opportunity to attend training sessions and earn industry-based certifications in accordance with the Jump Start programs they teach. The event is held every year with this year attracting more attendees than ever before. 

The Jump Start program prepares high school students to secure careers in leading industries and enroll in courses that fit those industries. The program help students obtain the credentials necessary in order to graduate with a career diploma or enhance their university -preparatory diploma. The program currently has 49 pathways for students to choose from. More pathways are currently being developed.

The program, now in it's 4th year, is co-hosted by the Louisiana Department of Education, South Louisiana Community College and the Louisiana Community and Technical College System. It has already awarded nearly 900 certifications to Louisiana teachers.

25 certifications were offered at this year's event.

  • Construction Crafts: National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Carpentry Level I and II, NCCER Core, NCCER Electrical Level I, NCCER Instructor Certification Training, NCCER Welding Level I and II
  • Business Management and Administration: Micro-Enterprise (Regional and Statewide)
  • Health Science: Basic Life Support CPR Provider, Basic Life Support Instructor, Certified Patient Care Technician, Emergency Medical Responder - Initial and Refresher             
  • Hospitality and Tourism: ServSafe Food Protection Manager
  • Information Technology: Adobe Certified Associate Dreamweaver, Flash Professional, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Premier Pro; Autodesk AutoCAD Certified User; CIW Web Foundations Associate Internet Business Associate; Computing Technology Industry Association
  • Transportation, Distribution and Logistics: Automotive Service Excellence

The Jump Start Super Summer Institute kicks off an exciting year for the program. In 2017-2018:

  • Students will graduate for the first time with either a TOPS University Diploma or a Jump Start Career Diploma;
  • The first "K-16" Jump Start Pathway in Pre-Engineering will be implemented in the Capital Region;
  • This year's pilot Jump Start Summers program, in which students earn academic credits and industry-based credentials while honing their workplace "soft skills" and receiving a summer wage, will be expanded to more students in more school systems; and
  • More students will participate in high-quality workplace-based learning through interactions with in-person and virtual mentors, including experts dedicated to mentoring students with disabilities and students in alternative school settings.
