Sewage system wreaks issues for some New Iberia residents

Posted: Updated:
New Iberia, La. -

Being outside usually means fresh-smelling air for most people, but for these Iberia Parish residents, it is the opposite.

Kerry and Rebekah Prudhomme said they are helpless as sewage from the parish system keeps overflowing their front yard.

"Well, pretty much everything that goes down the toilet comes back up. We have toilet paper, feminine products, human feces on the ground right now," said Kerry Prudhomme, who built his home only three years ago.

The sewage has not only overflowed outside, but flooded the inside of the home as well, twice. It has even made its way into the Bayou Teche, which flows right behind their home.

"Now, we keep our cleanout covers off, so the sewer can come out in our yard rather than in our house," said Kerry.

The homeowners said they have been having these issues stink up their home off and on for over a year now.

"And, we've contacted the parish sewer district, our parish president, our council men, anyone else I can think of to try to get something resolved. This morning, the guy came and he said, 'I can't stop that.' I don't fault them for that. I think it's just that they're getting a lot of infiltration to the system. We're the lowest house on the block, apparently, so it comes up in our house."

We reached out to the Iberia Parish Sewerage District No. 1 for comment, but will have to wait for a response until Monday.
