SCOTT, La. -

Demolition is complete and the re-building process has begun at Westside Elementary.

In August of 2016, the school sustained extensive damage from the widespread flood event experienced throughout Acadiana. The school system chose to repair Westside rather than replace it with a new facility. After considering both options, the school system administration, along with consulting architects and engineers, determined they could transform the existing facility into a brand new school for less cost and in a shorter time than opting for an entirely new structure.

All the sheetrock walls were removed from the school, and they are being replaced with cinder block construction.  School board officials say in case of another flood, clean-up will be easier with the cinder block walls.  Construction is scheduled to be completed in spring of 2018, but students will not attend the school until August of 2018.

Construction for the temporary school is scheduled to be completed in three weeks at Scott Middle. Construction crews are currently working on the driveway and the bus pick-up line.  When that is complete, the staff will move desks and books from from the N.P. Moss campus to the Westside Temporary campus.

FEMA and insurance will cover most of the amount to repair Westside Elementary School in Scott.
