New French charter school to come to historic 1926 building in Sunset

Posted: Updated:

In St. Landry parish, a new French immersion charter school is coming to sunset.

Academie Franco Louisianaise de Sunset is expected to open next year in the old Sunset High School.

That building, which dates back to 1926--hasn't been used since 1991. Many in sunset are ready for that building to be put to good use.

For Sharlene Broussard, this building was once filled with a lot of memories.

"Sweating because there wasn't AC, sitting on the heaters, all kinds of memories, the squeaking of the floor," said Broussard.

She graduated from Sunset High in 1984 and was excited to learn that the rumors of renovation are now a reality.

"In Louisiana we have a lot of buildings that are old and that is part of our history so being able to take the old building and turn it into something new without out tearing it down is a great thing for the town of sunset," said Broussard.

The new charter school hopes to connect its students with the French culture that runs deep through Louisiana

"Having the historic building for us is important not only because are we preserving the history in the form of a building in the town of Sunset but also creating a French immersion school which is preserving, advancing our culture and language in this area," said Stephen Ortego, an AFS representative.

And although the building has been empty since 1991 residents are happy that it will once again see new generations of students pass through it.

"It has been, always will be and when it is renovated it will be even more an asset to our community," said Charles James, the mayor of Sunset.

The nearly 3 million dollar renovations are set to finish in the fall of 2018.
