New Iberia city councilman proposes sidewalks along Highway 14

Posted: Updated:

Adding sidewalks along Highway 14 in Iberia Parish will be discussed among New Iberia City Council members. On Highway 14 running in front of the Lowes and down to Sucrose Road towards the Pepperplex.

One of Councilman David Broussard's main priorities is to boost safety by investing in the city's infrastructure.

We've had two or three people get killed trying to cross going to Ruby Tuesday's that was years ago we don't want to have it happen again," says Broussard.

Broussard believes if there were sidewalks along this stretch of Highway 14 and those fatalities may have been prevented.
"We in the country right here, but not that far away from the hotels we need sidewalks on this grass to encourage the people that stay in these hotels right behind you Sucrose Road that goes to our baseball parks," says Broussard.

Those parks are apart of the Pepperplex that brings in thousands of athletes and their families, creating more foot traffic in the area. If the council approves the sidewalks, then how will they be paid for?

DOTD officials say there are funding options the city can apply for, if the sidewalks are built, all maintenance would be the city's responsibility. Broussard says the safety improvement could be a driver for more economic growth.

Most of our hotel business a lot n the summer is people coming to our baseball tournaments we need this help from the state to put sidewalks and future and future businesses come along here we are going to need it more and more.
