Opelousas man shot and killed

Posted: Updated:
OPELOUSAS, La. -

An Opelousas family says the person police have in custody is not the only person responsible for their loved one's death.

Right now, 19-year-old Jaquan Frank is in jail in connection with the shooting death of Mark Joubert. Police say Frank confessed to shooting Joubert multiple times and killing him.

"I will never forgive you for what you have done to my husband," the victim's wife, Sue Joubert, said. "That's something that I will have deal with every single day for the rest of my life."

According to police, Frank says the victim was stealing items off of his porch.

"At that point, he [Frank] armed himself and went outside," Crystal Leblanc of the Opelousas Police Department said. "He armed himself, and the victim fled on foot."

However, the family says that's not the case. They believe Joubert was attacked by multiple people before his death because of his injuries.

"We went to see my brother, and he had two scars under his eyes, cut straight," said his sister, Kimberly King. "It wasn't just one person. They wouldn't be able to cut under his eyes evenly."

Police say those scars came from an exit wound that scared both of Joubert's eyes.

"There's only one person considered to be the suspect," Leblanc said. "We didn't find any evidence that someone else was involved, even a witness statement. It was only one person. From the preliminary with the ER doctor and emergency staff, it was just seen that he had gunshot wounds, not anything outside of that.

Joubert's family stand by their claims. The family says they want more people arrested.

"They have someone in custody; yeah, that's fine, but there was more than one person who killed my husband, and I know this," Sue Joubert said. "No one is doing anything to stop this violence."

Opelousas police stand by their investigation that only one person was involved. Jaquan Frank is in jail and charged with second-degree murder.
