A father and son have been arrested in connection with the accidental shooting at Moss Bluff Elementary in Calcasieu Parish.

In a press conference today Thursday May 18, 2017.  Sheriff Tony Mancuso of the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office released the identities of the two individuals as 50-year-old  Michael Lane Dugas and his 17-year-old son Jake Dugas.

According to Mancuso, the two are the father and brother of the 7-year-old first grader who brought the gun to school. The father is being charged with Improper Supervision of a Minor and Negligent Injury. His17-year-old  son is also charged with Negligent Injury.

An investigation revealed that the father gave the son a gun for protection to keep in a bedroom Jake shared with the first grader.  It was also discovered Michael was aware Jake kept the gun unsecured, with no gun lock or holster, in a shoe organizer that hung on the wall in the bedroom the boys shared.  During a search of the residence detectives located the transparent mesh shoe organizer hanging next to the bed where the first grader slept.  Detectives also located an unlocked fireproof safe with keypad entry inside the bedroom closet that was not being used.

Officials reiterated that the lesson to learn in this case is to keep guns or weapons in a secure and safe location.

School Board says the school is doing well. Counselors have been at the campus over the past days working with students. They look forward to moving ahead.

Mancuso said that he believes that people have the right to own guns, but "we have to protect our children....we urge you to keep guns safely out of reach of young children"

Mancuso also stressed that he believes that the security of schools are well looked into, and that individuals are the reason these events occur. The young child in this case will not be charged. Mancuso says that at that young age, the 7-year-old is not culpable for their actions.

Michael Dugas was arrested in 2015 for crashing into a pickup truck allegedly drunk and killing Vance Charles. He was arrested on charges of vehicular homicide and first degree negligent injury. His court date is set for Sept. 5, 2017 at 9 a.m.
