Ville Platte woman shot and killed in crossfire; family seeks justice

Ville Platte, La -

A Ville Platte family is mourning the death of a loved one who was killed in the crossfire of a shootout.

Family members identify her as Kathy Weston. Weston was killed while leaving a convenience store in the 500 block of Chataignier Road Saturday night.
So far, no one has been arrested.

The crime scene where the shooting happened, is now the scene of a makeshift memorial for Weston.

"She was just a good person," Weston's sister Jessica said. "She never bothered nobody."

Jessica heard the gunshots during the shooting. Knowing her sister was at the store, she ran toward the scene.

"At first I didn't see her," Jessica emotionally said. "Then I came back and she was on the ground."

She added, "I couldn't believe it because she was just in my house. We would always be together."

Family members say Weston was best known for her faith in God.

"She was in one place all the time," cousin Darisa LaBelle Griffith said. "Church and she was serious about it."

Weston's faith and love for God is now giving her grief-stricken family comfort. While the family honors Weston's memory, they now turn to getting her justice.

"Why would ya'll do that to her?" Weston's sister Roxann said. "She didn't bother nobody. I just want to know why they did it."

Jessica added, "I want justice. Whoever did that, I want them to come forward to have closure. That's all. We just want justice."

The community will host a Candlelight Vigil on Wednesday night for Weston. It will start at 7 p.m. at the corner of Chataignier and Jackson Street.

If you know anything about the case, call the Ville Platte Police Department.
