Person of interest sought by NOPD in transgender woman killing

NEW ORLEANS, La. -

The New Orleans Police Department are looking for a person of interest in the stabbing death of a transgender woman. 

New Orleans Police looking for 53-year-old Leonard Ward, as a person of interest in the stabbing death of Ciara McElveen. The incident occurred on February 27, 2017 near the 1600 block of Columbus Street. 

On February 27, Officers say they were called out to the scene where they located McElveen suffering from stab wounds. She was transported to a local hospital where she later died. Read more on the investigation here

Police say the Ward is not a suspect in the case but they believe that he may have valuable information related to the investigation. 

McElveen was one of three Transgender women who were killed within the week of February 22nd. Chyna Gibson was killed in a shooting just two days before McElveen in New Orleans East. No one has been arrested in that killing.

A week earlier on February 19, 2017 the death of 18-year-old Jaquarris Holland in Monroe was reported. A suspect was arrested in that case.
