Four arrested in racketeering scam on Chitimatcha reservation

CHARENTON, La. -

Officers with Chitimacha Tribal Police Department served arrest warrants on four suspects that were wanted in a check scam that occurred at a tribal owned business.

Police say that several month ago, officers received information that there were irregularities with some personal check received for cash. During the investigation into these check police learned that a group of people used fake identities to open bank accounts and make cash withdrawals from tribal businesses. 

Officials learned that the suspects in this case were a part of several similar cases in other areas in South Louisiana. Police estimate the total amount stolen from tribal businesses to be thousands of dollars. 

Four suspects have been arrested and booked into the St. Mary Parish Jail: 

  • Cotina Walton Batiste, 34, Charlotte Drive, Patterson, was charged with Racketeering, Identity Theft, Forgery, and Access Device Fraud.
  • Kevin Batiste, 39, Williams Street, Patterson, was charged with Racketeering, Identity Theft, Forgery, and Access Device Fraud.
  • Robert Skipper, 35, Dora Street, Centerville, was charged with Racketeering, Identity Theft, Forgery, and Access Device Fraud.
  • Mark Smith, 52, Myrtle Street, Centerville, was charged with Racketeering, Identity Theft, Forgery, and Access Device Fraud.

The investigation is ongoing and more arrests are pending.
