A church in Bunkie is a total loss after a Sunday night fire.

Fire marshals said the fire most likely started in the sanctuary of David Haas Memorial Methodist Church just before 10 p.m. on Sunday.

The blaze quickly spread to the fellowship hall, just missing the children's educational center and the pastor's home just feet away.

Tanner Ferguson, a boy scout whose troop regularly met at the church, said, "It was a big tragedy. Everybody had so many memories and good things that happened here. It's just over. We lost so much . . . The boy scout troop - we did our meetings at the top floor. They said it's destroyed."

Pastor Brian Ridgedell said, "A lot of my congregation has been here for 50, 60, 70 years as part of this church. So, they're hurt that their church building is gone, but at the same time, they realize that the church is not the building. The church is the people."

Although the church is a total loss, the pastor is surprisingly optimistic about the future.

Ridgedell said, "We believe that God didn't cause this to happen but God can use this for good. We're kind of excited to see how he might do that. Now, that doesn't mean we're not going to miss our church, but at the same time, we're just excited to be working together, just come together and be the church."

Ferguson added, "We'll just have to pray and see if God gives us a new meeting place for us just to gather and have fun >

Services will resume this week at a sister church in Evergreen.
