Evangeline Parish -

Two candidates are hoping to become Pine Prairie's next mayor. Current mayor Terry Savant is retiring from office after serving three terms as the village's leader. Now, two men who are no strangers to running for office are seeking the village's top spot.

Quint west is a familiar face in pine prairie and Evangeline Parish. He's an assistant principal at Evangeline Central School and he's  Pine Prairie's current mayor pro temp. West said that experience makes him qualified for the mayor's job.

"I've been councilmen and Mayor pro temp for 12 years," West said.  "I've worked closely with the mayor that's going out and he's taught me a lot of good things."

His opponent Wade Deshotels Sr. ran for mayor four years ago, but was disqualified because he didn't live in Pine Prairie. Deshotels said he now lives in the village and is ready to get the its finances in order.

"I buy and sell property and I'm an auctioneer and I can't see anything that would qualify me more to be a mayor," Deshotels said. "One place that handles a lot of money is an auction. I've done 60 years of being an auctioneer so I'm quite experienced."

West said he wants to use grant money to bring more businesses and children's activities to the community.

"We do have small business here that does offer some jobs, but it's not enough," West said. "I think we can do more and most of our citizens have to leave to go to work. They have family here and they want to stay here. Some leave and don't come back and I think we have to find ways to get jobs here so these people will stay."

While Deshotels says he wants to get drug's off Pine Prairie's streets.
"In the community the first thing I would do is get rid of all the drug dealers in Pine Prairie," Deshotels said. "I would go door to door and even if I have to , I'm a pretty good fighter."

Both men agree that if elected their main goal will be to make Pine Prairie a better place to live.

"This old cat ain't going to put up with any trash because it's a bad place to raise kids when it's so much drug dealing in the community," Deshotels said.

West said, " I've listened and heard the ideas of the people and I've listened to them.If they give me the chance I just want them to know that I will listen to their ideas and work on making it happen."
