BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins wants Louisiana's Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to create a bounty program for Asian carp, an invasive fish species. The Republican congressman who represents southwest and south central Louisiana sent a letter to Wildlife and Fisheries Secretary Jack Montoucet, seeking the program to encourage fishermen to harvest the species. Montoucet says he hopes the congressman will lead efforts to secure federal dollars for the "expensive fight" against the fish.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Louisiana State University's dental school in New Orleans will be giving entertainment and check-ups to about 180 students from a New Orleans elementary school. Friday will mark LSU's 11th year in Give Kids a Smile Day. The American Dental Association Foundation says that nationwide, the program has helped more than 5.5 million underserved children. A rural Louisiana group says many kindergarten through third-grade students get their first toothbrushes through its work.

MANDEVILLE, La. (AP) - Funeral services are scheduled next week for former Mandeville Police Chief Tom Buell. Buell, who saw the department grow from 12 to 54 employees during almost 30 years as chief, died Monday of cancer. He was 67. The New Orleans Advocate reports services are scheduled Feb. 24 at Church of the King in Mandeville.

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - A 19-year-old man is in custody accused of stabbing his mother and her boyfriend. Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator says deputies responded to a call Friday night about a woman badly cut with a knife. When authorities arrived, emergency personnel were treating 46-year-old Michelle Wright and 44-year-old Allen Meshell. Wright's son, Dustin Eschenbach, faces charges of attempted second-degree murder and aggravated battery. It was unknown if he has an attorney.
