BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Louisiana's education department has divvied up a $1.5 million federal grant aimed at improving early childhood education to eight parishes. The department says the grant will help pay for teachers at low-performing early childhood education centers with training aimed at helping improve classroom instruction and kindergarten readiness.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Police in Louisiana say a woman's boyfriend is accused of fatally stabbing and shooting the woman at their home. News outlets report that 30-year-old Louis Howard was arrested and booked into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a count of second-degree murder.

HAMMOND, La. (AP) - The former mayor of a Louisiana town has been indicted for one count of malfeasance in office. The Daily Star reports a Tangipahoa Parish grand jury indicted former Independence Mayor Michael Ragusa on Monday. District Attorney Scott M. Perrilloux says the charges stem from allegations related to Ragusa's failure to pay into the state retirement system. Ragusa left the town with a $900,000 debt after refusing to pay the town's retirement share for its employees.

ST. MARTINVILLE, La. (AP) - A 23-year-old correctional officer is facing criminal charges for allegedly trying to bring contraband into the prison. WAFB-TV reports Keland Andre Simmons faces a charge of malfeasance in office and introduction of contraband into or upon the grounds of a state correctional facility. He was released Saturday after posting $20,000 bond.
