Yambilee Festival Gets National Attention

Yambilee Festival 2009 is underway in Opelousas, and this year the festival is getting some national attention. A film crew with TLC is town documenting the festival for an upcoming series.

"It features fun and different festivals and Pageants, so we're here at Yambilee festival to see who gets crowned Yambilee Queen," said Kim Kantner, a producer with TLC.

A leg injury may have ended Anna Normand's quest to become Yam Queen 2009, but it wasn't enough to keep her out of the spotlight.

"Yeah I got to interview with TLC, hopefully I'll be on the show," Normand said.

Since the festival's inception in 1946, the pageant has been a big deal around town, and now locals are excited for the rest of the country to see.

"We're happy to have them, any exposure that Opelousas or any small town can get is a plus," said Gloria Juneau of Opelousas.

Producers could not comment on what the new series would be named, or when the Yambilee Festival might be featured.
