NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Xavier University graduate, now a lawmaker in Florida, returns to the university in New Orleans next month to discuss his struggle with cocaine addiction.
State Rep. Darryl Rouson of St. Petersburg will be the keynote speaker on Sept. 14 when Xavier marks National Recovery Month, a national observance aimed at educating the public on treatment and services available for people suffering from substance abuse or mental health disorders.
A university news release says Rouson, a 1977 Xavier graduate, lost his family and home to the drug addiction before recovering and embarking on a career of community activism.
