WWII vet Henton honored as Distinguished Veteran during Greenlawn Memorial

Greenlawn Memorial Gardens honored its most distinguished veteran of the year during its 50th Annual Memorial Day commemoration under the live oak trees.

John "Jack" Henton, Jr. was honored at the cemetery on N. University Ave. 2014 as this year's recipient of the award. Henton, a long-time resident of Carencro and a World War II veteran, died in September 2013. He was survived by his wife Dorothy and his three children.

Members of the renowned Destination Choir of Destiny of Faith Church sang renditions of military selections to pay tribute to fallen soldiers of different wars. Refreshments were served for the families and public in attendance.

Commander Tom Green of the Louisiana Veterans Honor Guard praised the sacrifice of those veterans who have committed their lives to their country.

"The most important thing is to honor those fallen heroes, those that have spent their life they signed on the dotted line," Green said.
