Workers tearing down part of old N.O. hospital

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Workers are tearing down part of the former Pendleton Memorial Methodist Hospital to clear the way for a new 80-bed hospital in eastern New Orleans.
Mayor Mitch Landrieu's office announced Wednesday that demolition had begun.
The hospital has been closed since Hurricane Katrina flooded it on Aug. 29, 2005.
A new hospital serving residents of eastern New Orleans, the Lower 9th Ward and Gentilly is planned to open there by the end of 2013. The project is expected to cost about $130 million.
Earlier this month, Landrieu said the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development had agreed to insure a $97.6 million mortgage loan.
DURR Heavy Construction LLC is handling demolition at the old hospital site.
