Work to begin on facility for EMS, coroner

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Crews will soon break ground on a new joint headquarters for the New Orleans emergency medical services and the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office. Both agencies have been operating of out of temporary quarters since Hurricane Katrina.

The new facility will be built on Earhart Boulevard at South Claiborne Avenue. Test piles are being driven on the site.

Deputy Mayor Cedric Grant told the City Council's Criminal Justice Committee on Wednesday that work is expected to begin late next month and wrap by June 2014.

The project is expected to cost $12.8 million and will be funded by Federal Emergency Management Agency and disaster community development block grants.
