Zane Viator, 23, New Iberia, was serving time in the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center on charges of Theft and Second Degree Battery which were originated in Iberia Parish. He was sentenced in April of 2009, on those charges and was incarcerated at Hunt Correctional Center. He was approved by the Louisiana Department of Corrections to participate in a work release program and was assigned to work with an offshore company. On February 8, 2010, he was transferred to our facility to complete his sentence and participate in the work release program.
He was transported on March 4, 2010 from the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center to report to the Company’s headquarters in New Iberia, and then was transported by the company to an offshore site. After completing the job on Saturday, March 6, 2010, the company transported him back to headquarters, but both Mr. Viator and the company failed to notify authorities at the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center to arrange transportation back to the facility. Because no notification was given as to his return, St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office authorities believed Mr. Viator was still performing his duties offshore.
On Monday, March 8, 2010, The St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office was notified by the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office on that Mr. Viator was picked up by authorities there on Suspicion of Burglary charges of which he was later cleared. Shortly afterward, Mr. Viator was released back into the custody of the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office authorities, and was returned to the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center where he faces additional charges in connection with this incident.
