LAFAYETTE, La. - Senior guard Brandi Schambough guided the Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team to a dominant 108-38 victory over Centenary College Saturday afternoon at Earl K. Long Gym in their first and only exhibition game of the 2012-13 season.
Schambough, the lone senior on the squad, led all scorers as she tallied 22 points, draining six three-pointers in just 18 minutes of play.
The game served the purpose of familiarizing the team (especially its seven newcomers) to a game-like setting before Louisiana travels to Baton Rouge to tip off the regular season against Southern on Friday, Nov. 9.
New head coach Garry Brodhead promised to play aggressive defense and push the ball up the floor and that's exactly what the fans witnessed. The Cajuns forced 32 Centenary turnovers, 20 of them on steals.
Keke Veal alone had eight steals and Kia Wilridge added three. Despite a fast-paced offense, the Cajuns turned the ball over just 11 times.
"I'm impressed with the effort we gave...the team played hard," Brodhead said. "We try and get them to practice hard and I thought we did a good job of coming out strong.
"We had a little more focus than I thought and I'm a little surprised by how well we shot the ball just because we have been focusing more on defense and hadn't really been working on that. For the most part, I loved the effort and the excitement of a young team."
The Cajuns dominated in nearly every facet of the game, shooting 47.7 percent from the field (42-of-88) and 42.9 percent (12-of-28) from behind the arc. All 10 Ragin' Cajuns players scored and six scored in double figures.
After Centenary scored the first basket of the game, the Cajuns never trailed. UL pulled away with a 15-0 run and rode the surge to commanding halftime lead of 57-21. The Cajuns forced 19 Centenary turnovers, generating 23 points off of turnovers.
Junior college transfer Byronesha Santiago had a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
The newcomers were led by freshman guard Sylvana Okde (Houston, Texas/Westbury Christian) who had an impressive showing for the Cajuns, scoring 15 points and dishing out six assists in 30 minutes of action.
Fellow freshman and Crowley, La., native Kia Wilridge (St. Thomas More HS), whose tenacious defense and athleticism make her a promising player for the Cajuns, added 11 points to go along with five assists.
Sophomore Robbie Brown added six points, three assists, and five rebounds and fellow sophomore Megan Whittaker scored 10 points in just nine minutes of action.
Also making their first appearances in a vermilion and white uniform were freshmen Adrienne Prejean (6 points, 6 rebounds), Keke Veal (9 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists), and Jasmin Mills (5 points, 11 rebounds) and junior college transfer Ashley Benjamin (12 points, 8 rebounds).
The Ragin' Cajuns kick off the 2012-13 regular season on Friday, Nov. 9 in Baton Rogue facing Southern at the F. G. Clark Activity Center. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. (CST)
