Woman's Foundation, Inc. is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year. The Foundation is a local non-profit organization, whose mission statement is "to promote the total well-being of women and their families". In their 30 years they have served 450,000 people throughout Acadiana.
The Woman's Foundation, Inc. has contributed to the Lafayette Community and Acadiana since 1980. In 1984, they began sponsoring continuing medical educational activities for physicians on health issues affecting women and their families. The Foundation is accredited by the Louisiana State Medical Society as an approved provider of continuing medical educational (CME) programs for physicians.
In 1987, they opened the Health Information Center (HIC), a free health library of over 300 pamphlets and videotapes on various health and wellness topics, available to the public at no charge.
The Foundation established nursing scholarships at UL-Lafayette and LSU-Eunice and developed a community education department to focus on offering forums, lectures and educational programs for the community on topics of concern. Current programs include Body Talk, Beyond Body Talk and Sex, Truth & Consequences; Parents and the Law; Safe Sitter; and TLC - Tweens/Teens with Life Choices.
In 2002, they began their annual week-long Women's Health Expo bringing current health information to women in the local community. In 2004, the Newborn Exhibit, a fundraiser for the Foundation, opened to commemorate the birth of any baby ever born at Women's & Children's Hospital.
The Foundation is presently governed by a volunteer board of directors comprised of individuals from the medical, legal, business, education and professional community who direct and oversee the work of a five person professional staff. WFI's Officer's for 2010: Dr. Kenneth Brown, President; Mary B. Neiheisel, RN, EDD, Vice President; Judy Kennedy, Secretary; and Ronald Prejean, Treasurer.
