Woman Speaks After Grandchild's Teacher is Attacked with Machete

Tonight investigators are trying to figure out what caused a man to collapse and die while he was attacking a woman with a cane knife.

It all happened this morning in the 1100 block of Story Street in St. Landry Parish just outside Opelousas. KATC was told the victim, who is recovering in a hospital tonight, is a teacher in the St. Landry Parish School System.

"She's a sweetie, I just don't know who could have done this and why," said Carolyn Hall. "Why hurt someone who is just so humble and never hurt nobody, all she did was try to help people," said Carolyn Hall.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Deputies say the suspect broke into the victim's home and began attacking her with a knife, similar to a machete. Then, for unknown reasons, the suspect collapsed and died.

"We have no indication of what she did to him to cause him to die, but we're investigating that right now," said Capt. Megan Vizena St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office. "There are a lot of questions that our investigators need to know from her, like did she know the suspect, were her doors locked."

Carolyn Hall's granddaughter is a student in the victim's class. Hall says she shocked at the news because everyone seems love her.

"In the morning, I bring my grand-baby to school and when she comes home, that's all she talks about," said Hall.

Deputies say the victim is in stable condition and an autopsy is pending on the suspect, whose name is being withheld at this time.

"A lot of unanswered questions at this point in the investigation, we just need to make sure that we have a positive I.D. on the suspect and notify his next of kin of his death and possibly figure out a motive." said Capt. Vizena.

This case remains under investigation.
