NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A Tickfaw woman convicted of identity theft and tax crimes has been sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison.
U.S. Attorney Jim Letten says U.S. District Judge Jay C. Zainey on Tuesday sentenced 31-year-old Tarshia McGary who was found guilty of falsifying Social Security numbers and dates of birth in order to file fraudulent tax returns.
Letten's office says McGary received the stolen identities from people who stole documents containing the information from an office building being cleaned in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
McGary was arrested after an investigation by the Internal Revenue Service.
