LIVINGSTON, La. (AP) - A state judge has sentenced a Walker woman to 12 years in prison following her manslaughter conviction in the death of her 15-month-old daughter.
District Attorney Scott Perrilloux tells The Advocate in a news release that 29-year-old Johnnie Garner pleaded guilty to the crime Oct. 24.
Perrilloux says an investigation showed that Jalaya Allen's fractured rib, torn liver and facial bruises likely were not caused by the toddler pulling a computer monitor off a table onto herself, as Garner had told police.
Garner told police that a computer monitor had fallen on Allen's head and chest, causing the injuries to her child.
Perrilloux says Garner must serve 85 percent of her sentence before she becomes eligible for parole.
