In Iberia Parish, a woman is speaking out after finding a baby in a parking lot, locked inside a car with the windows up.
42-year-old Crystal Derouen is charged with cruelty to a juvenile. Deputies said Derouen left the baby inside the car for 12 minutes while she went shopping.
Lauren Ortego was making a quick run to Wal-Mart, when she said she saw Deureon leave the baby in the car.
"I mean, I freaked out. I started shaking, I was like really really shaky. I mean, I didn't know what to do. All I knew was that I had to call the cops," said Lauren Ortego.
The 22-year-old said police showed up shortly after her call. She said she kept her eye on the baby the whole time, and was worried about the heat inside the car.
"By the time I saw her close the door, and they busted the window, and got the baby out, it took maybe 12 minutes at the most. But 12 minutes is still more than enough," Ortego said.
With the baby out of the car, deputies waited for Derouen to return.
"She started busting out crying, started screaming, 'I'm not a bad person, I'm not a bad person,' crying everywhere. She was frantic, but you know, she did wrong," Ortego said.
"I don't want to be like, oh I'm a hero, but I think I saved that baby's life. You know, there's no telling how long she would have been in there," Ortego said.
Derouen was released from jail on a $1500.00 bond.
