Woman convicted in slaying

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - After deliberating for less than two hours, a Lafayette Parish jury has convicted Debra Sue Hewitt in the 2010 slaying of her boyfriend.

Hewitt and John Clifford Romine were both accused in the killing of 47-year-old Dwayne Ball, whose decomposing body was found five to six weeks after his death.

Prosecutor Pat Magee said Hewitt, who uses a wheelchair since losing her leg, of stomping on Ball with her prosthetic leg, then taking the leg off and using it to strike Ball repeatedly on the head.

Magee said Romine is set to stand trial for second-degree murder next month.

The Advocate reports Hewitt waived her sentencing rights and was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday by state District Judge Marilyn Castle.
